Augusta Hiking

There's no better way to start your day than a brisk sunrise hike! Here in Maine's Kennebec Valley, we're lucky to find ourselves surrounded by splendid scenery and countless miles of hiking trails.

If you're looking for a place to greet the sunrise on an open trail, then you're in luck. Our real estate agents are here to share their favorite spots for a morning hike in the Augusta area!

  • Viles Arboretum - 153 Hospital St, Augusta, ME 04330
A botanical garden spanning over 200 acres, Viles Arboretum is a favorite among locals in Augusta. Open daily from dawn until dusk free of charge, the arboretum offers 6 miles of trails that crisscross a lush landscape of meadows and woodlands. Leashed pets are allowed, making this a perfect place to take your four-legged friend for an early morning walk. Viles Arboretum is located within minutes of these Augusta homes for sale

  • Kennebec River Rail Trail - Augusta, ME 04330
The Kennebec River Rail Trail hugs the west bank of the Kennebec River for 6.5 miles, beginning in Augusta and passing through the communities of Hallowell and Farmingdale before reaching its endpoint in the city of Gardiner. For many Augusta residents, the trail is within walking distance of home. If you get an early start, you can watch the sunrise over the river and get back just in time to grab coffee at Wrapped Up Coffee House in Augusta!

  • Vaughan Woods - Litchfield Rd, Hallowell, ME 04347
Open daily from dawn until dusk, the historic Vaughan Woods & Historic Homestead is a beautiful place for a morning hike. Located just minutes from many Hallowell homes for sale, the park includes several easy hiking trails, of which the 1.5-mile Corniche Loop is the most popular. The trail meanders through shady woodlands and crosses Vaughan Brook atop a historic stone bridge. The scenery is especially serene at first light as the rising sun illuminates the water.

  • Augusta Nature Center - S Belfast Ave, Augusta, ME 04330
You'll find 5 miles of trails waiting to be discovered in the Augusta Nature Center. This 175-acre wildlife area has been open daily to the public since the 1960s and offers a landscape of wildflower meadows, beaver ponds, trickling streams, and even an old granite quarry that has gradually been reclaimed by the forest. The trails are relatively flat, easy, and well-marked, making them ideal for hikers of all ages and experience levels.

  • Vassalboro Wildlife Habitat - 565 Webber Pond Rd, Vassalboro, ME 04989
Just a 15-minute drive from Augusta, Vassalboro Wildlife Habitat is a picture-perfect destination for hiking and bird watching. This 366-acre property features several trails that range in difficulty from easy to moderate. Arguably the best morning hike is the Alewive Amble Loop, a 1-mile loop trail that follows the shoreline of Weber Pond. Arrive at dawn, and keep an eye out for great blue herons fishing along the shoreline.

  • Augusta Greenway Trail - Arsenal St, Augusta, ME 04330
Another great close-to-home option for an early morning stroll, the Augusta Greenway Trail is a 1-mile paved route that offers a beautiful view of Downtown Augusta. This trail follows the east bank of the Kennebec River, directly opposite the Kennebec River Rail Trail, and it's possible to hike from the northern end of the Greenway across Augusta's Memorial Bridge and connect to the Rail Trail.
