Monmouth Museums

Are you planning a visit to Augusta — perhaps to look at Augusta homes for sale? While you're in the area, we highly recommend checking out some local museums and attractions. One of the best ones to visit is the Monmouth Museum, which houses displays related to early life in Maine. Visiting this museum will give you a better understanding of the region's history, and it will also feel like a peek back in time. Here are the key things you need to know prior to your visit.

  • Key Attractions
The Monmouth Museum consists of eight separate buildings. Each one houses different exhibits related to life in early 19th century Maine.

One building is the Blacksmith Shop, where you'll learn how blacksmiths made horseshoes and other steel objects. Another building is the Carriage House, where you'll learn all about transportation in the 19th century. Visitors also enjoy the Blossom House, which is where you can see flowers and other plants native to the region.

Another core attraction at the Monmouth Museum is the genealogy resources. You can page through books of records to see if perhaps some of your ancestors had ties to the region. These resources are available year-round.

Before you leave, make sure you stop by the General Store. It is set up like an actual General Store from early Maine, and it sells all sorts of treats and souvenirs.

  • Planning Your Visit
Other than the genealogy resources, most of the Monmouth Museum attractions are only open in the summer. — from June 1 until September 24th, 2022. So there's still time to visit this season! The museum is open Wednesday - Sunday between 1 pm and 4 pm. It's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. You can wander through the buildings at your own pace, or you can take a guided walking tour.

The Monmouth Museum is located at 751 Main Street, Monmouth, ME 04259. This isn't far from Monmouth Beach and the Theater at Monmouth, so you may want to plan a visit to those attractions on the same day. There is plenty of free parking available nearby.

  • Volunteering and Local Involvement
If you stay in the Augusta area a bit longer — or if you move here — you'll soon discover how involved the Monmouth Museum is in other local historic events. They often collaborate with local libraries and schools to put on seminars about Maine history.

You can also volunteer with the Monmouth Museum and get an even more in-depth look at their work. For example, they are always looking for volunteers to help clean the historic buildings in the spring before they open.

It's always nice to learn about the history of the town and the region where you live. Whether you're looking at Monmouth homes for sale or just visiting for a time, our real estate agents highly recommend visiting the Monmouth Museum.
