Historic Augusta

Spring has arrived, and there's no better time to experience Augusta as the city blossoms back to life. Taking a guided tour is a great way to see all the Kennebec Valley has to offer this time of year.

Augusta isn't just one of Maine's most vibrant and beautiful cities; it's also the state capital and home to some amazing historic architecture. These are some of our real estate agents' favorite guided tours to help you get to know our home city.

  • Guided Blaine House Tours - 192 State St, Augusta, ME 04330
Built in 1833, the Blaine House is the official residence of the governor of the state of Maine. The house, which is named for teacher-turned-political leader James G. Blaine, is an Augusta landmark and also a public building. Guided tours are free of charge but must be scheduled in advance (there are no walk-in visits). Tours of the historic home are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and typically last around 25 minutes; they can be scheduled for individuals or groups of up to 20 people.

  • Kennebec Creeps & Crawls - 0 Water St, Hallowell, ME 04347
It doesn't have to be Halloween to explore the ghostly side of Augusta! Kennebec Creeps & Crawls tours are offered year-round, giving guests a glimpse into the haunted past of Augusta and the nearby city of Hallowell. You'll explore cemeteries and historic landmarks, learning their true, spooky stories along the way.

  • Maine State House Tours - State St, Augusta, ME 04330
The Maine State House, located in the heart of Augusta, is the capitol building of the state of Maine. It's open to the public on weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm, and a variety of guided and self-guided tour options are available. To see as much of the building as possible with a knowledgeable guide, join one of the 60-minute guided tours that begin hourly from 9 am to noon. Advance reservations are not required, but they are recommended.

  • Old Fort Western Open Tours - 16 Cony St, Augusta, ME 04330
A former British colonial outpost alongside the banks of the Kennebec River, Old Fort Western was built during the French and Indian War in 1754. The ground it occupies is now part of modern-day Augusta, and the fort is one of the city's most beloved landmarks. The original 1754 Garrison building still stands, along with other parts of the fort that were restored in 1916, 1921, and 1988. Open tours are available daily from Memorial Day through the middle of October and can also be scheduled by appointment in other seasons.

  • Maine State Museum - 230 State St, Augusta, ME 04330
The official Maine government's museum, located adjacent to the Maine State House, the Maine State Museum, offers a fascinating glimpse into the state's history. Exhibits and artifacts range from Maine archeology and prehistoric life all the way up to the modern era.

  • Vaughan Homestead Tours - 2 Litchfield Rd, Hallowell, ME 04347
The historic Vaughan Homestead is a beautiful and well-preserved home in the middle of the Vaughan Woods park. Built in 1794 and virtually unchanged, the homestead and its grounds are open to the public on guided tours.
